Jailed for abusing four girls

A “DEGENERATE paedophile” from Redruth has been jailed for abusing four girls over a period of 35 years.

Arthur Edwards, 80, of Wesley Street, was found guilty of 14 child sex abuse charges, stretching from 1975 until 2010.

Several of his victims were in the public gallery and showed their appreciation when he was jailed.

The court heard that one of his victims was abused at different times over a period of more than 10 years, abuse which the court heard “destroyed her life”.

His latest victim was abused in 2009 and 2010, with the pensioner fondling her bottom over her clothes.

He was sentenced for 10 counts of indecent assault on a child under the age of 16, two counts of sexual activity with a child and two counts of indecency with a child.

He was ordered to serve four years for offences against one victim, with three consecutive sentences of 12 months for offences against the other three.

Because of the dates when some of the offences were committed, he will have to serve two-thirds of his seven-year sentence before being considered for release.

Joss Ticehurst, defending, said there was very little he could say on behalf of Edwards.

“He is 80 and his health is less than perfect because of his age,” Mr Ticehurst said.

Edwards was also banned from having contact without supervision with children under 16 following his release. He was also placed on the sex offenders register for the rest of his life.

He will have to serve two-thirds of his seven-year sentence before being considered for release.
