Pensioner sentenced to five years in jail for abusing girls

PENSIONER Brian Cordy has been jailed for five years for molesting two young girls in Exeter and Exmouth.

The 72-year-old brought a packed sports bag to Exeter Crown Court, as he waited to be sentenced for six sex offences.

He had admitted four indecent assaults and two offences of gross indecency with a child, involving two girls under 16 in separate incidents.

The court heard that Cordy had immediately confessed to police, when challenged about the allegations.

The offences took place during the 1990s and earlier this decade, when Cordy was living in Devon. He was since moved to Weston-super-Mare.

Prosecutor Ann Hampshire said he began abusing one girl when she was five and continued to do so on various occasions when he encountered her, over several years.

He also molested another youngster around three or four times, when she was under 16.

Miss Hampshire, referring to the first victim, said: “The victim remembers crying herself to sleep at night, unable to tell anyone what happened because she thought no-one would believe her.”

The court heard that the girl then suffered panic attacks and a lack of confidence and now required counselling.

Police launched an investigation into Cordy’s behaviour after her abuse came to light.

Miss Hampshire said about the second victim: “She blanked it out because she wanted to get on with her life.”

Defence counsel Alison Scott-Jones said Cordy had no previous convictions.

She said: “His regret and remorse continued throughout these proceedings.

“Mr Cordy accepts all the responsibility and did not seek to shift the blame. That’s unusual in matters of this nature.”

Judge Jeremy Griggs said he was reducing the jail term because of the early guilty plea.

Cordy will be on the Sex Offender Register for life, have a Sexual Offences Prevention Order until further notice and was banned from working with children indefinitely.
