Man jailed for raping girl, 8

A CHILD molester has been jailed for six years for abusing three girls.

John Malyon, 42, repeatedly attacked his victims, raping one of them, and used threats and bribes to keep them quiet. Some of the crimes dated back more than 20 years but Malyon was only recently arrested when the victims, now adults, told the police.

Judge Ian Davies, passing sentence, told Malyon he betrayed his position of trust. “The children were scared by what you did to them. They never consented to any sexual behaviour you indulged in. You told them it was their secret.”

Malyon, who has been living in Bristow Road, Bexleyheath, as a condition of bail, denied the charges.

The court heard the abuse started in 1976 when Malyon, a family friend, targeted one of the girls at her home in Plumstead.

The attacks became progressively more serious until the eight-year-old threatened to tell her mum. Malyon told her: “Who do you think she will believe, me or you?” And he warned his victim she would be put in a children’s home if she told anyone. Similar allegations were made by two more women who lived in Greenwich when Malyon abused them.

Judge Davies said: “I take into account that in the region of 20 years has elapsed since these offences were committed and there has not been any recurrence.

“Nonetheless this remains a serious case and you must be sentenced on the basis you have caused them to appear as witnesses, bringing back all the memories of events they no doubt wished to forget.”

Malyon was jailed for six years for rape and two years for eight indecent assaults, to run concurrently.
