Child porn teacher spared prison

A former teacher at Eton College who admitted downloading child porn has been spared a jail sentence.

Ian McAuslan, 58, had admitted two counts of possessing indecent images of children, and 14 of making them, at Bracknell Magistrates’ Court in April.

McAuslan, from Lingwood Close in Southampton, was arrested after the images were found when his school computer was handed in for an upgrade.

He was given nine months’ imprisonment, suspended for two years, on Wednesday.

Judge Christopher Critchlow at Reading Crown Court also ordered McAuslan to be placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for seven years.

Judge Critchlow said: “You have a fine record as a teacher and were clearly devoted to your profession.

“I give you the full credit for that long service and all that you have done in that career.

“It’s a tragedy for you and all who know you that your career should end this way.”

Indecent pictures

The court had heard that IT staff at Eton, whose past pupils include Princes William and Harry, discovered the images when McAuslan handed the computer in for a routine upgrade.

Police discovered more than 2,000 images on the computer, 10% of which were indecent pictures of children – all boys.

After examining samples of the indecent pictures, Bracknell Magistrates Court decided to send McAuslan to crown court which has greater sentencing powers.
