Ex-teacher jailed over child abuse images

A former PE teacher and cricket coach from Sussex has been jailed for four-and-a-half years for distributing child pornography on the internet.

Peter Watts, 37, of Upper Dicker, near Hailsham, admitted nine charges of distributing the images and 35 of making indecent images of a child.

Police found more than 3,500 child porn images on his computer when they raided his home, Lewes Crown Court heard.

He was given a non-custodial sentence for similar offences in 2001.

Documentary blamed

Watts, of Camberlot Road, Upper Dicker, pleaded guilty when he appeared in court in August and asked for 3,541 similar offences to be taken into consideration.

The charges were related to a period of time between 19 October 2002 and 27 January 2004.

Watts, who taught at Bexhill College in the 1990s, claimed his attempts to change his ways fell apart after he was featured in a BBC television documentary on paedophiles, the court was told.

Judge Charles Kemp told him being featured in the programme was no excuse for his crimes.

In addition to the jail sentence, Watts was banned for life from working with children and ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register for 10 years.

The computer equipment seized from his house by police was ordered to be destroyed.
