Man jailed for raping schoolgirl

A man who raped a 12-year-old girl on two separate occasions and threatened to kill her if she told her mother has been jailed for five years.

Thomas Edwards, 20, of Freeman Road, Dukinfield, Tameside, pleaded guilty at Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court to two counts of rape.

The court heard he attacked his victim in September 2002 and June 2003.

Edwards was also banning from working with children and must sign the Sex Offenders Register for life.

He will be the subject of an extended licence period for a further three years on his release from prison.

Anthony Longworth, prosecuting, said Edwards raped his victim “against her protests and struggles”.

Passing sentence Judge Adrian Lyon told him: “The effect upon this girl can only be imagined.

“Only a custodial sentence of significant length can be imposed.”
