Ex-councillor jailed for assault

A former Redruth councillor has been jailed for indecently assaulting a young girl.

Andrew Trathen, 52, of Rose Row in Redruth, denied intentionally sexually touching the girl last April.

But at the end of his trial in July a jury returned a 10-2 majority verdict that he was guilty.

On Tuesday a judge at Truro Crown Court sentenced him to 18 months in prison and ordered him to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register for 10 years.

He was acquitted him of having intentionally caused the girl to engage in sexual activity with him, and also of having sexually touched another young teenager.

Defence counsel Martin Edmunds stressed that Trathen had no history of these offences, and would not do it again.

Judge Jeffrey Rucker told Trathen the assault had caused his victim to have difficulties in her relationship with her parents and life at school, and resort to self harm.
