Paedophile stole card to buy porn

A paedophile who took his dyslexic partner’s credit card to buy graphic child pornography has been jailed.

Brian Gerrard, 56, from Trowbridge, Wiltshire, downloaded more than 11,000 images between 1999 and September 2003.

A court was told he had used his girlfriend’s card to pay for the pictures because he knew she would not be able to read her bank statements.

Gerrard admitted 20 counts of making pornography and one of possession, and was jailed for nine months.

He was also placed on the sex offenders register for five years.

‘Immensely bitter’

Swindon Crown Court was told that Gerrard was an undischarged bankrupt who had no credit cards of his own.

In mitigation, it heard he and his partner had lost a child after months of expensive fertility treatment which had cost them their house.

Defence barrister Mark Ruffell told the court: “That destroyed them both and it made him immensely bitter. He couldn’t take it out on his wife because it was not her fault.

“He found himself himself thinking about his own desires in a way he had not ever done before.”

In recognition of the difficult circumstances, Judge John McNaught reduced his sentence from 12 to nine months on each count, to run concurrently.
