Paedophile videoed sex with girl

A man who helped set up a camera to film men, including himself, having sex with a teenage girl has been jailed.

James Marland, 22, from Abergele, north Wales, was extradited from the United States to face a child sex charge.

Marland changed his plea to guilty at Mold Crown Court ahead of his trial last month and was jailed on Friday for two years and nine months.

He was one of up to 50 men who had sex with the girl when she was aged 13 or 14.

Mold Crown Court was told that Marland helped “evil controller” Frederick Lawlor set up a hidden camera to film the abuse of the girl.

Warrant issued

Lawlor, 52, was jailed last month indefinitely after admitting 18 offences involving the girl.

He had also offered the girl for sex to strangers on beaches at Pensarn and Llanddulas.

A number of other men have also been jailed for abusing the girl.

A warrant for Marland’s arrest was issued after police saw video footage of him abusing the girl from the camera he had helped set up.

Marland, who had travelled to the USA, was arrested for vehicle theft in Pennsylvania and extradited to the UK.

He was arrested at Heathrow Airport.

Sentencing at Mold Crown Court on Friday, Judge Merfyn Hughes QC told Marland that he had become an acquaintance of Lawlor who provided a young girl to men, many of them strangers, for sex.

“You had regular social contact with Lawlor. You must have been aware that she was at school, a young girl of the age she was,” the judge told him.

“While she may have been sexually mature, she had the appearance of a 13 or 14 year old. Her immature behaviour must have been confirmation of that fact.” The judge added: “You simply treated her as a sexual object for your own desires without any consideration for her feelings or for the effect you abuse would have on her.

“You have contributed to the very serious damage which has been done to her.”

Defending barrister Simon Mintz said that there was a clear distinction between his client and the other mainly middle aged defendants.

“Many of them acted together, there was a predatory element to their cases,” he said.

Marland was told to register with the police as a sex offender for life. He is also banned indefinitely from working with children.
