Freed paedo is nicked again

ONE of Britains most wanted paedophiles was arrested tonight after he was mistakenly FREED by blundering police.

Evil Joshua Karney was arrested in Hove, East Sussex, today – nearly two months after cops had released him when he gave them a fake name.

Karney – classified as very high-risk for groping and trying to rape a boy of 14 – was nicked for drunken behaviour.

Joshua Karney, 29, was jailed for 15 months in 2002 for an indecent assault in Barnoldswick, Lancashire

When he was first arrested he was held in cells, fingerprinted – then released with a fixed-penalty fine.

Horrified officers only realised their mistake three weeks later – after checking the results of fingerprint tests.

And last night a probe was launched into how cops in Barnsley, South Yorks, let the predator slip through their fingers after his arrest on November 24.

Karney, 30 – who uses five aliases – was jailed for 15 months in 2002 for attacking the lad at a camp site in Lancashire.

He has been on the run since 2003 after failing to report to his probation hostel after his release.

He is wanted by eight police forces and also appears on the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centres website – which lists Britains most wanted perverts.

Blackburn MP and Justice Minister Jack Straw said: I will certainly be asking for more information from the police.

David Whipp, of Lancashire Police Authority, added: This needs to be investigated and I will be demanding explanations from South Yorkshire Police.

A spokeswoman for the force said last night: We regret greatly that Joshua Karney was released from custody after he gave false details.

He was issued with a fixed-penalty notice for a minor offence of being drunk and disorderly in Barnsley.

An investigation is under way into the full circumstances to establish how this happened.
