Man jailed for grooming and assaulting girl

A MARRIED man who groomed a 13-year-old schoolgirl has been jailed.

Graham Paul Wilkinson, 44, groomed the girl and sexually assaulted her.

Hull Crown Court heard he made her believe they were in a relationship together and were in love.

Wilkinson, of Withernsea, then repeatedly sexually assaulted the girl in Hull.

Prosecutor Simon Waley said: “She let him do what he wanted, but she didn’t really understand what was happening.

“He said he loved her and kissed her.

“She felt very confused and felt she couldn’t tell anyone.

“She thought she was in a relationship with the defendant. She blamed herself for what was taking place.”

Wilkinson met the girl in Hull. He was caught when she finally told a friend about what had been happening.

In her victim impact statement read in court, the girl said: “He was controlling to the point where I would rather be alone or with him than anyone else.”

She said he manipulated her to such an extent she stopped going to school and lost all confidence.

Wilkinson, who has no previous convictions, pleaded guilty to five counts of sexual assault.

Jailing him for five years, the honorary Recorder of Hull and the East Riding Judge Michael Mettyear said: “You completely beguiled her, leading her to believe she was in a relationship with you and you loved each other. Instead you abused her.

“The affect of this offence has been grave.”

Wilkinson has been given a sexual offences prevention order for eight years and has been ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register for life.
