Sex offender caught with 70,000 child abuse images

A man caught with more than 70,000 images of child abuse on his computer has been jailed for two and a half years.

Ross Masson downloaded tens of thousands of indecent pictures of children over five years.

When police officers raided his Aberdeen home he told them: “I don’t think they’re that bad. It’s just girls naked.”

Masson, of Fountain Grange, Aberdeen, was jailed at the High Court in Edinburgh on Tuesday after he admitted possessing indecent images at his home between May 2005 and October 2010.

His home was first raided in 2008 when Grampian Police got a tip off from the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre about the use of the internet at the property.

Masson was released pending the results of an examination of computer equipment seized from his home.

More than two years later his house was raided a second time, when police got a tip off about someone using an internet forum known to be connected with child abuse.

Experts uncovered 72,344 illegal images of children, including nearly 200 which depicted serious sexual abuse.

Defence advocate Mark Strachan told the judge, Lord Bracadale, that Masson suffered from chronic depression and was sorry for what he had done.

The judge said: “The images were of an extreme nature. I am satisfied that a custodial sentence is the only appropriate sentence.”

He also ordered that Masson be placed under supervision for three years following his release from prison.
