Five years for child abuser

A Tycroes man convicted of sexually assaulting two young girls has been jailed for five and a half years.

Judge Keith Thomas jailed Stephen Alistair Bevan for four years for five assaults on one of the girls when she was aged about nine and an additional 18 months for one assault on the other girl.

The jury heard that Bevan touched both girls indecently several years ago, while in his car and other places.

Bevan, aged 37, of Teglan Park, was led from the dock of Swansea crown court on Friday protesting his innocence.

His barrister, Frank Phillips, said Bevan still denied touching the girls despite the jury’s verdicts. He argued Bevan, a former mechanic, was not a danger to the public.

But Judge Thomas described the offences as ‘serious’ and said they justified a substantial prison term.

He said Bevan had been a heavy drinker and it was probable the assaults took place while he was under the influence.

Bevan was also ordered to register with the police as a sex offender for life.
