Former Coventry engineer sentenced over sick photos of children
TWO paedophiles were caught out because they did not realise computers automatically store the contents of discs and memory sticks.
Despite not saving the depraved photos and videos, their computers still kept a secret record of what they had watched.
Yesterday former Coventry repair man Barry Clements, 64, and Stuart Robinson, 63, both from Leicestershire, admitted making indecent photos of children.
Judge Peter Ross told them their “perverted desires” contributed to the “evil business” of child abuse around the world, but claimed sending them to jail immediately would not cure them.
Clements, of Standard Hill, Coalville, who worked for a cleaning firm in Coventry, and Robinson, of Glebe Close, Mountsorrel, were each made subject to a three-year community order involving supervision and attending a sex offenders programme.
They were also banned from having any unsupervised contact with children under 16, and banned from using the internet.
They were ordered to sign the sex offenders register and each pay costs of £1,000.
They were warned if they committed any further offences in the next three years they would each be jailed for 16 months.
The court heard that police found two computers at Clements’ office and another at his house, containing a total of 65 indecent images he had downloaded from the web.
A box of CDs and memory sticks were also found containing a further 3,000 pictures and 355 film clips, which analysis showed he had watched, but not saved.
A computer belonging to Robinson – a self-employed entertainments agent – contained 665 images which had also been viewed, but not saved.
John Bartlett, prosecuting, said: “Playing a CD or memory stick automatically saves certain parts of it.”
Defence lawyers said neither men sent the images to other paedophiles and that Clements had no previous convictions.
Judge Ross said: “I refuse to use the words ‘child pornography’ because what this evil business is all about is children being abused for the sexual pleasure of men like you, children who are injured, traumatised and often caused great pain just so your perverted desires can be satisfied.
“You no doubt think of yourselves as very distant but you an essential part of the trade. Without desires of men like you this trade would not exist.”
