Pervert jailed for catalogue of abuse

A PAEDOPHILE whose crimes were discovered by chance was last night starting a 13-year jail sentence after a judge branded him a danger.

David Wilkinson urged the children to keep quiet about their ordeals, saying: “It’s nowt.”

Teesside Crown Court heard yesterday that the three children obeyed Wilkinson’s orders, but one of them recorded their anguished feelings on a mobile phone.

A cousin playing with the phone passed it to an adult relative and the police were called after he listened to the recording, in which the victim said: “David Wilkinson likes to see me naked.”

When police arrested him in 2008, they found dozens of child pornography pictures on his computer, and two of his victims broke their silence.

Wilkinson, from Esh Winning, County Durham, denied the allegations, but confessed to looking at internet pictures of children in swimwear and sportswear.

After a trial, the 30-year-old was convicted of rape, five charges of indecent assault and one count of indecency with a child – spanning 15 years from the early Nineties.

Judge Howard Crowson told Wilkinson: “These convictions demonstrate that rather than a productive adult life people believed you led, your life included the abuse of children.”

Wilkinson, whose most recent address was in Waterlooville, Hampshire, admitted 12 charges of making indecent photographs of children and one of possessing 85 of them.

Dan Cordey, in mitigation, told the court: “Before these matters came to light, he was of good character.”

Adrian Strong, prosecuting, said Wilkinson’s victims’ personalities had changed as a result of the abuse, and felt unable to reveal details of it until recently.

Judge Crowson ordered that Wilkinson should sign on the sex offenders’ register for life and be banned indefinitely from having unsupervised contact with under-18s.
