Man jailed for child porn images

A MAN was sent to prison for 12 months yesterday after admitting making and possessing indecent photographs of children.

Bryn Dowding, 48, of Sunnybrook, Ebbw Vale, pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to 23 charges of making indecent photographs of children and one count of possessing indecent images between May 18 2004 and October 13 2008.

The 23 counts of making indecent images included one image categorised at level five – the most severe category on a sliding scale – 10 level four images, four level three images, one level two image and seven images categorised at level one.

The charge of possessing indecent material related to 287 images found on a memory stick, discs and hard drive including seven level five images.

Prosecutor Claire Pickthall told the court Dowding was caught when his former wife found a memory stick belonging to her husband containing indecent photographs and handed it in to Ebbw Vale police station.

Ms Pickthall said that during police interview, Dowding admitted that he would get drunk before going on his computer to look for adult pornography.

He would later return to his computer when he was sober, where he would see “pop ups” of child pornography. Dowding claimed he put these images on disc or memory stick in an effort to remove them from his computer.

He said he was not interested in viewing the images, but could not offer an explanation for why he had not got rid of the disc or memory stick.

Jeff Jones, defending, said Dowding had not distributed any of the images and that only a small number of them fell into categories four and five. He added Dowding pleaded guilty early in the proceedings and felt remorse for what he had done.

Judge Roderick Denyer ordered Dowding to serve 12 months in prison for each of the 24 charges to run concurrently, and ordered him to remain on the sex offenders register for 10 years.
