Teen was ‘groomed’ by 43-year-old

A CONVICTED sex offender has been jailed for four years for having a relationship with a 15-year-old girl.

Paul Watson was disqualified from working with children when he was convicted of touching another 15-year-old girl in 2005.

He starting flirting with his latest victim, who went to police in September, and spoke to her on Facebook, saying he hoped there would be a “happy ending.”

Nottingham Crown Court heard they started kissing and he told her they would get together when she was 16.

Watson, 43, of Urban Road Business Park, Kirkby-in-Ashfield, had sex with her at her home and in his Mitsubishi 4×4.

“The complainant said the defendant became obsessive and did not want her seeing other people,” said Sue Matthews, prosecuting.

The five offences of sexual activity, which Watson later admitted, emerged when she confided in a friend, who told her mum.

Watson had sex with her on three occasions and she twice had to perform an indecent act.

“She now feels upset, angry and ashamed,” said Mrs Matthews.

“She doesn’t feel she can trust anyone. She was worried she could become pregnant, but is not.”

Mark Watson, mitigating, told Judge Michael Stokes QC the behaviour had been consensual at all times.

“His previous conviction plainly aggravates his position,” he added.

The judge told Watson that on release he would be on an extended licence for three years and would have to sign the sex offenders’ register for life.

“This abuse, although over a limited period, was sustained and involved a clear degree of grooming, manipulation, using this child to satisfy your own lust and she undoubtedly became besotted with you,” he added.

“I’m satisfied you do present a significant risk of causing serious harm to young females. I cannot predict when it is safe to release you. Your offending is escalating, not reducing.”
