Colin Lovely pleaded guilty at Maidstone Crown Court

A FORMER soldier with an exemplary record has been jailed for six months for downloading child porn from the Internet.

Colin Lovely was told by a judge there had to be a prison sentence after he admitted making indecent photographs of a child.

Judge Andrew Patience, QC, said: “The worrying thing for me is that there is very limited insight on your part into the impact of these matters.

“You are described as being ambivalent, less than clear, about your understanding of that effect of this sort of abuse on children. They are damaged forever, more often than not. That is how serious it is.”

Maidstone Crown Court heard that police were investigating another pervert when they discovered he had sent Lovely, of Strand Close, Meopham, near Gravesend, indecent images of children.

Jo Cope, prosecuting, said Lovely, a health and safety manager in the construction industry, admitted receiving the images, but was not particularly interested in them as he was into “swinging”.

He had been in chatrooms and was asked if he wanted younger pictures. He said he did. He later changed computers and transferred the images to floppy discs, CDs and a laptop.

Lovely admitted making indecent photographs of a child. Dominic Webber, defending, said most of the offences were committed in March 2004, while three were in April last year.

Mr Webber said: “He is now ashamed and embarrassed and disgusted. But for his wife and children he would not be here, because he has contemplated suicide.”

Lovely served in the Royal Engineers 9th Parachute Squadron from 1972 to 1995, during which he received commendations.

Lovely was also placed on the sex offenders’ register for seven years.
