Pervert avoids jail sentence after sex attack on girl

FORTY-EIGHT-YEAR-OLD Anthony Barnett has been sentenced to a three-year community order after he sexually assaulted a teenage girl.

The defendant, of Henry Street, Newcastle, pleaded guilty to two charges of sexual assault.

Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court yesterday heard Barnett sexually assaulted his victim on a number of occasions by touching her breasts under her clothing and on one occasion over her clothing.

Anis Ali, mitigating, said Barnett, who has no previous convictions, was deeply embarrassed and ashamed.

Barnett, who will be on the sex offenders’ register for five years, was ordered to pay £1,200 costs.

Judge Michael Dudley said: “This was serious, it was repeated. It would normally attract an immediate custodial sentence.

“It seems to me the public can be better protected by me making you the subject of a community order for three years.”
