Culprit beaten for sex attack on young girl

THIRTY-EIGHT-YEAR-OLD Stewart Gavin has been sentenced to a community order after he sexually assaulted a girl.

Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court yesterday heard Gavin indecently assaulted the youngster over her clothing.

The court heard he was beaten up shortly after the incident.

Gavin, formerly of Chapel Street, Silverdale, pleaded guilty to the sexual assault of a child.

Joanne Wallbanks, mitigating, said Gavin has no previous convictions for sexual offences.

“The defendant had a drink problem,” she said.

“The incident occurred over a short period of time. He was heavily intoxicated.”

Miss Wallbanks added that Gavin has been in custody for five months and lost his home as it was ransacked.

Recorder Nirmal Shant QC sentenced Gavin to a three year community order with three years’ supervision and a requirement to attend a sex offender training programme.

“I sentence you on the basis this was a fleeting touch but over her clothing,” said Recorder Shant QC.

“The risk can be best addressed by the probation service having an input into your life.”

Gavin will be on the sex offenders’ register for five years.
