Officers found images in raid

ALMOST 2,000 indecent images of children were found on a computer when police raided a 59-year-old man’s home.

Geoffrey Chater has been handed a suspended prison sentence after admitting downloading indecent material.

Chater, of Alderley House, Grindon, near Leek, pleaded guilty to five charges of making indecent images of children.

Prosecutor David Bennett yesterday told Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court that police executed a search warrant at the home on April 23 last year.

They found 1,901 indecent images on the computer.

There were 1,256 at level one, 133 level two, 285 level three, 213 level four and 14 at the most serious level five.

Judge Mark Eades sentenced Chater to eight months in prison, suspended for two years.

The judge also imposed a two-year supervision order and Chater must attend the community sex offender group work programme.

The defendant will be on the sex offenders’ register for five years and is banned from working with children.
