Inmate slits throat of paedophile in prison attack

A CONVICT who slit the throat of a Stoke-on-Trent child sex offender in “a punitive prison execution” attempt has been jailed for life.

Armed robber Kevin McCarthy used a toothbrush studded with razor blades in his bid to kill child sex offender Mark Holding, Stafford Crown Court heard.

The attack at Dovegate prison near Uttoxeter failed only because the blades missed Holding’s windpipe and vital arteries by fractions.

But the victim was left with a six-inch wound and blood gushing from his neck, said Nick Burn, prosecuting.

He was rushed to hospital where the wound was treated with 60 stitches.

McCarthy later told prison staff he knew Holding had been convicted of raping children and he “wanted to take his head off”.

McCarthy, aged 44, a native of Glasgow, but formerly resident in Kent, admitted attempted murder.

Judge Simon Tonking said McCarthy’s intention on May 19 last year was “a punitive execution inside a prison”.

Holding was serving a sentence of 68 months imposed at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court in April 2010 for sex offences against children.

Paedophile put behind bars

A PAEDOPHILE has been jailed after pleading guilty to 16 counts of rape.

Mark Holding, aged 45, of Crystal Street, Cobridge, was handed an indeterminate sentence at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court yesterday.

He was told he would serve a minimum of five years and eight months.

The court heard that Holding had carried out sexual abuse on two female victims, both of whom were under 16 years of age when the offending began.

The 12 counts of rape on one victim, and four counts of rape on the other, were sample charges.

Judge Paul Glenn said Holding was a danger to young girls, and would be jailed in order to protect the public.
