Guilty plea to child sex offences

A 51-YEAR-OLD man pleaded guilty to child sex offences yesterday as he was due to go on trial at Cardiff Crown Court.

Alwyn Jones, of Edge Hill, Pontllanfraith, had previously denied the charges but changed his pleas.

He entered guilty pleas to nine charges which were put to him by the clerk of the court.

Included were six counts of sexual activity with a child and two of indecent assault.

To a charge of rape, he told the court he was “not guilty of rape but guilty of an indecent assault”.

Crown prosecutor Janet McDonald told Judge John Curran that Jones’ claimthat the offence had “not gone as far as rape” because there was no actual penetration involved, was being accepted.

A further two allegations from a different female, which he still denied, were ordered to “lie on file”.

Ms McDonald said in the light of his other guilty pleas, it was being decided not to proceed to trial on those two matters.

Jones was told by the judge that sentence would be adjourned for reports because there were issues which had to be considered before a penalty was decided.

Defence counsel Marianne Bennett said he would be “disappointed” because he had been hoping to have sentence passed on him immediately.

His name was meanwhile ordered to be added to the sex offenders’register.

Judge Curran said the length of time his name would be required to appear on the list would depend on what sentence he received.

He was remanded in custody.
