Paedophile jailed for 10 years

A PAEDOPHILE is today starting a 10- year jail sentence for sexually abusing girls as young as three.

Brian Yates, aged 51, pleaded guilty to 18 offences against children under the age of 13 over several years.

Yates had been trusted to look after the children at his home in Long Lane, Breightmet.

His first victim was a seven-year-old girl who he was babysitting in late 1996. When she was asleep in bed, Yates sexually assaulted the girl and bribed her not to tell anyone.

In December 2005, Yates forced a three-year-old girl to touch him, then took indecent photographs.

From 2007 he abused a girl aged nine for more than three years and also took indecent photographs of her.

It was not until last year when the two older girls finally went to the police that his crimes came to light and police officers searched Yates’ home.

They seized his computer and mobile phone and found numerous other indecent photographs of unknown victims.

Yates went on the run and detectives in Bolton launched a media appeal for information in June last year.

Det Con Mike Mather, of Bolton CID, said: “Yates is a dangerous man who is sexually attracted to children. He has committed offences against three females, two of whom are still children. I’m pleased with the sentence and I think it reflects the seriousness of the offences and the length of time they went on for.

“I would also like to urge anyone who has suffered similar offences against them to report it to the police by calling Bolton CID on             0161 856 5740       or Crimestoppers on             0800 555 111      .”

Yates will serve seven years in custody and three years on licence.

He will also have to sign the sex offenders’ register indefinitely and will never be allowed to be alone, or take photographs, of children aged under 16.
