11 years for paedophile rapist

A PAEDOPHILE who began abusing a girl when she was just seven-years-old has been jailed for 11 years and four months at Bolton Crown Court.

Gordon Fearnley targeted his victim, providing her with treats and compliments as his abuse of her became worse over the years.

The court heard when she was aged 13 he began raping her and that continued until she was aged 16.

Fearnley, aged 56, of Burnham Avenue, Doffcocker, pleaded guilty to three charges of indecent assault and four charges of rape as well as possessing 21 indecent images.

Joanna Rodikis, prosecuting, told the court how the abuse, which took place between 1977 and 1987 has had a devastating affect on the victim with her attempting to commit suicide on one occasion and describing herself as “needy, insecure and desperate”.

David Morton, defending, said Fearnley admitted the offences and cannot believe his own behaviour.

“These are, of course, shocking offences which are not easily understood or explained,” said.Mr Morton.

Jailing Fearnley and placing him on the sex offenders register for life Judge Timothy Clayson told him: “It is apparent his victim suffered deep and enduring psychological behaviour.”
