Mum collapses as son is jailed

THE mother of a convicted paedophile was taken to hospital when she collapsed as details of her son’s crimes against a teenage girl were revealed in court.

An usher had to administer first aid and an ambulance was called when Christopher Gregoriou’s mother was taken ill during a sentencing hearing at Northampton Crown Court yesterday.

She collapsed as Judge Patrick Eccles heard how 38-year-old Gregoriou, of Clock Tower Court, Thorplands, conducted a full sexual relationship with an underage girl.

The 14-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, went on to have his baby, but only revealed to an adult who the father was five months after the relationship had ended when she was still only 15.

Gregoriou, who admitted two indecent assault offences and seven acts of unlawful sexual intercourse, was jailed for three years and will be on licence until 2010. He was put on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life.

Judge Eccles said that despite Gregoriou having previous sex offences against children, the powers of sentencing were limited because Parliament had failed to bring the law up-to-date.

He added: “What you did is bound to have an emotional impact (on the girl] in the future.

“She knew that if she told on you, for what you were doing, that she would not be believed. It is not natural for a girl of 14 or 15 to enter into a sexual relationship with someone of your age.”

Pearl Willis, prosecuting, said Gregoriou began having sex with the girl in May 2002 and she gave birth to a daughter a year later. DNA testssubsequently proved him to be the biological father.

The court heard how Gregoriou was previously jailed in 1983 for having sex with underage girls.

Jonathan Loades, defending, said Gregoriou had pleaded guilty, thereby preventing the victim the embarrassment and ordeal of having to give evidence in court.

He added: “He takes fully responsibility for his actions and realises that these actions were entirely wrong, as well as the drastic effect they will have on the girl and his own family.

“There was no force used during the offending and it was consensual. There was some relationship of some description.”
