Man jailed for sexually abusing young girl

A MAN from Oldham has been jailed for seven years for what a judge described as the systematic sexual abuse of a young girl.

Carl Marsland (47) pleaded guilty at Carlisle Crown Court to two charges of rape and nine of indecent assault.

The indecent assault charges were specimen examples of a course of conduct which lasted for six years.

His barrister Malcolm Dutchman-Smith said Marsland had been unusually frank about his problems and was willing to undergo any counselling or treatment to stop him reoffending.

The offences happened when Marsland, of Abbey Hills Road, was living in Cumbria in the 1990s.

The girl, who has now grown up, was aged from nine to 15 at the time. Judge John Phillips told Marsland he had corrupted the girl “on a massive and unforgivable scale”.

She had become so depressed and sad about what had happened to her that all her eyelashes fell out, he said.

“You made her your compliant victim and robbed her of a substantial part of her childhood,” he said.

He ordered him to register as a sex offender and banned him from working with children, both indefinitely.
