A pervert has been jailed for two years after police seized the biggest collection of “utterly sickening” child pornography found in Cumbria.

Paedophile Jeremy Bell showed no emotion yesterday as Judge Paul Batty, QC, imprisoned him for amassing a “vast library of revolting child pornography”.

Bell had collected about 150,000 images of children being abused as well as 3,000 video clips, which he kept catalogued on two computers at his home in Holyoake Terrace, Workington, up until his arrest in August 2002.

More than 100 stories about children being abused by adults were also discovered on Bell’s computers.

The 30-year-old sat motionless throughout the hearing at Carlisle Crown Court.

Prosecutor Tim Evans referred to one website Bell had mentioned during police interview.

He told the court: “He said that the reason he visited the site was that the only people who had ever liked him were children.”

Mr Evans added: “The court has viewed the images as have I. All of the material – even lower level images – would cause deepest horror to right-thinking members of the public. Some of the images are utterly grotesque – images of almost unimaginable horror.

“No words could ever adequately summarise the horror and depravity of the images collected by this defendant.

“There were 150,000 of them, the greatest number of images of this type ever recovered by the specialist unit on a computer.”

Judge Batty added: “You amassed a vast library of revolting child pornography.

“Regrettably, I have had the painful duty of viewing a selection of that material.

“The images covered every conceivable form of sexual depravity to children. You had an extremely high level of personal interest in the material.”

Bell, who the court heard had an “unfortunate background”, admitted 16 charges of possessing indecent images, which related to 2,471 pictures used by the prosecution to bring their case.

They ranged in gravity from level 1 images to the most graphic – level 5 – which covers sadism and bestiality.
