A CARLISLE dairy worker found guilty of sexually abusing threeschoolgirls has had his “unduly lenient” jail term almost doubled by top judges.

Lawrence Bowe, 62, of Petteril Street, was jailed for four years at the city’s Crown Court last November after being found guilty of 13 counts of indecent assault, one rape and one assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

London’s Criminal Appeal Court yesterday accepted submissions made behalf on the Attorney General Lord Goldsmith QC and increased his sentence to seven years.

November 2004

A CARLISLE dairy worker has been jailed for four years for a string of sex offences against three schoolgirls.

Former Kangol worker Lawrence ‘Logs’ Bowe, 61, showed no emotion as a jury at the city’s Crown Court found him guilty of 12 charges of indecent assault, one of attempted rape and also one of causing actual bodily harm.

Bowe – whose victims ranged in age from 11 to 16 – faced a maximum possible sentence of life for his crimes.

During the trial the jury heard that after the first assault, the first girl told her mother what Bowe had done to her but her mother said he was drunk – leaving him to abuse her daughter three more times before moving on to the two other girls.

Before he was led away to begin his sentence the judge ordered him to register with the police as a sex offender for the rest of his life, and banned him from ever working with children.

Bowe, who has lived with his wife Maureen in Petteril Street for 25 years, was convicted of indecently assaulting one girl three times, and attempting to rape her once, when she was aged 13 or 14 in the late 1970s.

He was also convicted of indecently assaulting another girl five times when she was aged between 11 and 16, in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and causing her actual bodily harm.

And he was further found guilty of indecently assaulting a third, who was 11, four times a year ago.
