A BARROW man who carried out sexual offences against a young girl has been jailed for three years.

A court heard that the victim’s parents did not believe her when she first made allegations to them.

But the judge said Shaun Mulholland had accepted his guilt “when police knocked on his door”.

Mulholland, 46, of Ramsey Park, admitted three charges of indecent assault and two of gross indecency.

The offences had included intimately touching a girl under 16.

All the offences were against the same girl and occurred some years ago.

She had gone on to tell her mother, but she did not believe her at first.

And her father did not really believe her when he was told, said the prosecution.

Mr Philip Holden, defending, told Preston Crown Court: “It was upsetting to her, that, having made allegations, the members of her close family didn’t believe what she was saying to them.”

Mulholland was arrested in late September.

He admitted sexually abusing the girl, claiming she had instigated the first offence.

At the end of the police interview he said he was sorry for his actions.

He was a man of previous good character.
