Former Clitheroe teacher has sex offences order extended

A DEPUTY headteacher who was spared jail for possessing indecent images of children has had an sex offences order against him extended.

Arthur Ian Lawson, 49, was given a community order in April after admitting eight separate counts relating to 148 images.

Lawson, of Barnacre Road, Longridge, had been a senior member of staff at Clitheroe Royal Grammar School before his arrest in March last year.

Judge Jonathan Gibson gave him a supervision order and told him to sign the Sex Offenders Register for five years. However, the judge also imposed a three-year Sexual Offences Prevention Order, when the minimum is five years.

On Friday, Lawson was at Burnley Crown Court so that the order could be extended.

Lawson, who resigned following the hearing, is currently claiming unfair dismissal against CRGS, claiming the Ribble Valley school failed to allow him to take, or to pay him for, statutory annual leave entitlement.

Officers seized two computers from his home in Barnacre Road, Longridge, and found the indecent images of children.

They also discovered Lawson had been searching the internet with suggestive phrases including the words schoolboys and spanking.

A large number of the images were in a school setting, including a gym and changing room.

One picture fell into the most series category of level five, another was in level four and the remaining 146 were in the lowest ranking, level one.

Police said none of the children in the images were from Clitheroe Grammar.
