A PAEDOPHILE from Barrow was handed a four year jail sentence today after pleading guilty to committing indecent assaults against a child in the 1960s.
George Hughes, 71, of Blake Street, Barrow was given the sentence at Barrow Crown Court today.
The sentence follows a police investigation into historic sexual abuse that took place several decades ago.
Hughes, then aged 23-24, took advantage of his male victim who was aged nine and 10 when the offences took place at a caravan site on Walney.
The case came to police attention after the victim came forward last year.
Hughes pleaded guilty to three offences of indecent assault on February 12 and appeared before Judge Lunt for sentencing.
Detective constable Sarah McArthur, of Barrow CID, led the investigation.
She said: “This has been a lengthy, difficult and harrowing time for the victim and I have had nothing but total admiration for him having the courage to come forward and tell us about these horrific incidents that happened such a long time ago.
“The sentencing today will hopefully go some way towards allowing the victim to finally put this chapter of their life behind him, and despite all these years, justice has finally been served.
