Man jailed for rape and sex assaults on child

A man has been jailed for seven-and-a-half years for rape and indecent assault – almost two decades after he carried out the sex attacks.

Trefor Jones, 54, of Milton Place, Machen, Caerphilly, committed the offences over a four-year period.

They occurred during the 1980s but the police were not informed until earlier this year.

Jones was originally charged with five counts of rape, three of indecent assault and two matters of gross indecency with a child.

His case was listed to begin before a judge and jury at Cardiff Crown Court earlier this week.

But on the morning of his trial – before a jury was sworn in – he entered guilty pleas to one rape charge and the three indecent assaults.

The remaining charges were ordered to ‘lie on file’ at the request of the Crown Prosecution Service – and cannot now be tried without permission from a higher court.

Judge Roderick Denyer QC sentenced him to five-and-a-half years for the rape and two years for each indecent assault.

The two-year sentences will run concurrently with each other but consecutive to the longer term.
