An ex-builder from Carlisle, jailed for sexually molesting a terrified teenager while giving her a lift home, has failed to convince three top judges he was too harshly punished.

Stanley Robert Welsh, 54, of Ellesmere Way, Morton Park, was put behind bars for five years at Carlisle Crown Court in October last year after he was convicted of sexual assault and doing an act tending to pervert the course of justice.

Judge Elgan Edwards, sitting at London’s Appeal Court with Lady Justice Hallett and Mr Justice Mackay, said Welsh assaulted the 17-year-old on the way back from a night out in early 2009.

The vulnerable teenager was “too scared to move” while he groped her private parts outside her jeans and fondled her leg. “She was terrified,” said Judge Edwards.
