A pervert who sexually abused a 10-year-old girl has been jailed for six years.

The judge told David Sproat that he was sending him to prison to protect the public. The 43-year-old will also be monitored in the community for three years after he is freed from jail.

Sproat, of Kirkpatrick Fleming, north of Gretna, pleaded guilty to sexually abusing the girl when she was aged between 10 and 12.

The offence took place between December 1990 and December 1992 at a town in Dumfrieshire.

Sentencing Sproat at the High Court in Glasgow, temporary judge Bill Dunlop QC told him: “Your victim in this case was very young.

“From what I have heard this young girl had no affection or support from her wider family which made her more vulnerable to people like you.

“For some reason you fail to see the enormity of what you have done. I have to protect the public from you.”

Sproat was also placed on the sex offenders’ register and will be referred to the Scottish government as being unsuitable to work with children.

Jamie Gilchrist QC, defending, said: “The complainer was too young at the time to realise anything wrong was being done.

“The accused knows that what he did was wrong and he pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity.”

The court heard that the offence came to light when the victim eventually told her mother and police were called in.
