Rapist is jailed for 10 years

A SEXUAL predator who groomed two girls was jailed for 10 years after admitting multiple rapes.

Paul Hooper, 50, of Llantrisant Road, The Graig, Pontypridd, admitted two counts of rape on the day of trial.

He admitted raping the girls when they were teenagers.

Despite the guilty pleas, Hooper still told probation officers the teenagers had been willing participants.

“It is claimed by the defendant that he had sexual intercourse on a consensual basis,” said Ieuan Morris, prosecuting at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court.

He said Hooper had groomed the girls by plying them with cigarettes and had told one he wanted to run away with her.

He said Hooper had sent her love letters declaring his love for her, and that Hooper raped her at the flat he occupied above a pub in Pontypridd.

Mr Morris told the court that Hooper had also spoken to the second girl inappropriately about sexual matters.

“That had an impact on her,” said Mr Morris.

She was also raped at his flat. Steven Donoghue, in mitigation, said Hooper was a man of previous good character and by pleading guilty had saved the girls from giving evidence.

Judge Richard Twomlow jailed Hooper for a total of 10 years, four for one rape and six for the other, and disqualified him from working with children.

Hooper will have to sign as a sex offender for life and he was also made the subject of a Sexual Offences Prevention Order limiting his contact with children under the age of 16.
