A paedophile who sexually abused a schoolgirl has been jailed for two years.

Peter Robertson, 57, was convicted at Liverpool crown court of two charges of indecently assaulting the girl when she was 14 and 15.

During his nine-day trial, the jury heard that Robertson had sex with the girl in 1979 and 1980.

The jury found that Robertson may have believed the girl, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, consented, and was cleared of rape, but found guilty of indecent assault.

The court heard that the two guilty verdicts were for specimen charges which reflected a course of conduct.

When the girl was 16, she had a child to Robertson.

Robertson’s barrister, Richard Vardon, said Robertson had lived in Wirral but had moved to North Somerset and “reinvented himself”.

Mr Vardon said: “He is something of a hypocrite and portrayed himself as an ordinary hard-workingman.

“He sired a child who will never know of the sordid relationship of the two of them.

“He did know better but he did not restrain the animal urge to have relations.

“Even his family are now fully aware of what he did.”

Mr Vardon said Mr Robertson’s eldest son, who is 18, wanted to be a police officer.

Judge Sean Duncan jailed Robertson, of Sheldon Close,Clevedon,North Somerset, for two years and placed him on the Sex Offenders’Register for 10 years.

Judge Duncan told Robertson: “You took advantage of the vulnerabilities that girl had at a time she should have expected help and guidance.

“This was a massive breach of trust. “It was wicked to take advantage of that young person’s weakness.”
