Man jailed for sex attack on teenager

A Leamington man who sexually assaulted a Warwick teenager after forcibly carrying her into his bedroom has been jailed for three years.

Robert Sargeant, 41, of Charles Gardner Road, admitted sexually assaulting the 15-year-old girl at his flat in May.

Appearing at Warwick Crown Court on July 19, he was cleared of the more serious charge of attempted rape, which he had denied. But Sargeant was ordered to remain on the sex offenders register for life and was banned from ever working with children.

Prosecutor Anthony Johnston explained how the girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had met Sargeant through a friend early in 2006 and had visited his flat on two occasions.

She arrived at the door alone in May while Sargeant already had visitors and he was at first reluctant to let her in because he believed she had a boyfriend. When she told him she did not, he allowed her inside and made her a sandwich.

But when the pair were alone later on he began to make advances towards her, despite her telling him not to.

Ignoring her protests, he picked the girl up and carried her through to his bedroom.

His victim tried to hold on to the doorframe, but he pulled her into the room and put her on the bed where he continued his advances for some time, despite the crying girl’s protests.

Sargeant eventually stopped, and then walked with her to Leamington station. He stayed on the train with her until she got off at Warwick.

The girl met a friend, who called the police after she had described what had taken place.

Mr Johnston said Sargeant, who had a number of convictions for violence, dishonesty and drug-related offences, had pleaded guilty only days before he was due to stand trial.

In mitigation, Peter Freeman said the assault had only lasted about five minutes.

He added that Sargeant, who knew he was likely to be jailed, had not committed any serious offences since 1997 and had no background of sexual offences.

But jailing Sargeant, Judge James Pyke told him: “You pleaded guilty late in the day to sexual offences where your victim was a 15-year-old girl.

“Throughout what happened you ignored her protests and her distress.”
