Man jailed for unlawful sex

A 30-year-old man has been jailed for having unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl he got pregnant.

Raymond Arthur Dodd, who admitted the offence on four counts, was sentenced to three years, four months and one week in prison.

Today the Royal Court heard that the relationship had been consensual and the pair had known what they were doing was wrong.

The year-long relationship began in November 2011 when she was 13.

Prosecuting advocate Rory Calderwood said Dodd had known how old she was and wished her happy birthday on her Facebook page when she turned 14.

The girl recalled having sex with Dodd on 258 occasions, he said, and she had consented each time.

Despite using protection she had become pregnant and she attended a family planning clinic, later having a termination.

Dodd continuously apologised and then tried to convince one of her friends her own age to say he was the father, by offering him a video game.

That failed though and he was later arrested. When officers searched his St Andrew’s flat they discovered notes Dodd had written reminding himself to delete phone and Facebook messages.

Defending Advocate Clare Tee said her client had pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity.

“He wasn’t predatory..but what is overwhelmingly evident is that there is a clear lack of judgement on his part.

“This is not somebody who has had the greatest upbringing.”

Judge Russell Finch said her age left her vulnerable, and the age gap and pregnancy were aggravating factors.

He noted Dodd’s previous good character and the fact there had been no coercion but expressed concern about his immaturity.

“This is not a case of two teenagers going too far. We take a serious view of this sordid matter.”

Dodd will be subject to a supervision order for one year and 51 weeks upon release.
