A PAEDOPHILE from Woking has been jailed after he was found guilty of 30 rapes, mostly involving children.

Alan Thornby, 35, was sentenced today (Monday April 8) to 18 years in prison for what police have called a “depraved” and “relentless abuse” against his young victims.

Thornby, of Gloster Road, Old Woking was found guilty at Guildford Crown Court of 18 offences against one child between 2005 and 2010.

The court heard how he raped a second child eight times between 2004 and 2010 and was found guilty of a further three counts of rape against a second victim.

He first appeared at Guildford Crown Court in October 2012 when he was on trial for the 18 counts of rape against one victim.

During the course of this trial new evidence emerged which resulted in the trial being halted and Thornby being subsequently charged with a further 12 counts of rape.

A new trial began in February this year and the two matters were joined with Thornby facing 30 counts of rape. He was found guilty of all offences after a nine day trial.

Detective Constable Kate Waters, of the Surrey Police Public Protection Unit, said: “This sentence today reflects the severity of the offending which was committed by Thornby when he was in a position of trust.  The two victims were relentlessly abused and have suffered as a result of their traumatic experiences.

“They are both to be praised for their courage and fortitude in taking the stand in giving evidence against this depraved individual who ruined their childhood.  In the case of the first victim it was even more emotionally draining as he had to give evidence in not one, but two trials.  I hope today’s outcome will go some way to helping the victims to gain some peace and move on with their lives and to try to put the offending aside.

“I am thankful the jury was able to see through the defendant’s web of lies during the trial which was, at times difficult to listen to, as the details emerged of the offences against his young victims.”
