Teacher jailed

A schoolteacher from Cardigan has been jailed for six months today for sexually assaulting five different teenage girls–two of them twice.

Swansea crown court heard that Edward Anthony Jones, aged 33, suffered a “spectacular fall from grace” and will never work with children again.

Judge Peter Heywood said although the assaults were at the lowest end of the scale he had to send a clear message to others in positions of trust that such behaviour would not be tolerated.

Huw Rees, the barrister representing Jones, said his fall from grace could not be more spectacular.

He said Jones had been a highly regarded teacher and colleagues were still willing to speak well of him.

“His career is ruined. He will never teach again. But he does need further insight into his behaviour, especially in relation to who he was,” added Mr Rees.

Judge Heywood said he had read “glowing” testimonials about Jones’ professional life in which he was portrayed as a loyal, dedicated and committed teacher.

He said it must be extremely sad and disappointing to Jones’ family to see him sitting in the dock of a crown court.

But this was a serious case and Jones had acted in a “blatantly lewd and disgusting way” towards young females who had the right to feel safe and valued.

He said sentencing guidelines suggested a non custodial sentence with perhaps a requirement to carry out unpaid work for the community.

But the seriousness of the case was Jones’ position as a teacher and such a gross breach of trust called for an immediate custodial sentence.

Jones, of Maesglas, Cardigan, was also ordered to register with the police as a sex offender for the next seven years, and was banned from working with children and young adults indefinitely.

Mr Griffiths said at a previous hearing that Jones had denied an additional charge of possessing 42 indecent images of children.

In light of his pleas of guilty to the more serious charges the prosecution would not continue with the child porn charge.

Mr Griffiths said the images had been recovered from a computer.

Jones had maintained that he was not responsible and that another man had had access to the computer.

Mr Griffiths said no action had been taken against the other man.

Teacher admits sexual assaults

A SCHOOLTEACHER from Cardigan has appeared in court to admit sexually assaulting five females (one aged between 15 and 16 years, one aged 15 to 17, and two aged 16 years or over)

Edward Anthony Jones, 33, was before Judge Paul Thomas at Swansea Crown Court for a plea and case management hearing.

Jones, of Maesglas, admitted sexually assaulting his victims – two of them twice – but he denied a charge of possessing 42 indecent images of children.

Patrick Griffiths, prosecuting, said no further action would be taken in relation to the denied charge.

He said the images had been recovered from a computer but Jones had maintained that he was not responsible and that another man had had access to the computer.

Huw Rees, the barrister defending Jones, said his client accepted the offences involved a breach of trust.

Jones was granted bail until the sentencing hearing later this month.
