Father jailed for child abuse images; Man ‘fascinated by images of abuse’

A DIVORCED dad who became fascinated with computer pictures of children being sexually abused and raped has been jailed for a year.

Judge Michael Burr told newsagent Julian Bowden that men like him were encouraging the evil, world-wide trade in child pornography.

Bowden, 39, formally of Iron bridge Road, Tongwynla is,and more recently living in Shelley Walk, Rhydyfelin, pleaded guilty to 15 charges of making and possessing indecent images.

Cardiff Crown Court heard he had become lonely and depressed after his divorce two years ago and started spending too much time on the internet.

Defence barrister Eugene Egan said Bowden hadn’t sought to make excuses once caught and had faced up to his wrongdoing.

“His fall from grace has been catastrophic,”he told the court.

“Apart from at Christmas he has not seen his two children or his step-child since his arrest and he has lost the pounds 45,000 he invested in his newsagent business.”

The barrister suggested Bowden could be given a community penalty enabling him to get “treatment” for his unhealthy interests.

But Judge Burr told him: “Each one of those images represents the abuse of a real child and therein lies the evil.

“You knew what you were looking for and you continued to indulge in it over a period of time.

“You got to the stage whereyou became used to looking at appalling images of rape and bestiality – desensitised.

“It demonstrates the extent to which you were fascinated by it.

“People who allow themselves to become attached to this sort of activity can expect nothing else but a prison sentence”

Bowden will be on the sex offenders’ register for 10 years and is banned from ever working with children.
