A pensioner described as a “serial abuser of children” was jailed for six-and-a-half years today.

Cyril Russell, 75, from Everton, was found guilty of 16 counts of indecent assault, which happened over a period of 30 years, at a trial last month.

At a sentencing hearing at Liverpool Crown Court Russell, of Whitefield Way, appeared via video link from prison because he was too infirm to attend.

His offences were against three victims and took place from the 1970s up until the millennium.

The victims, all girls, were aged between seven and 15 at the time of the assaults.

Sentencing him Judge Andrew Hatton said: “You were convicted on overwhelming, compelling evidence.

“Anyone who had the misfortune to sit through the trial cannot have failed to recognise the devastating impact your conduct had on the lives of all three of your victims.”

He added: “You were a regular and serial abuser of children over many years, over generations.

“You chose your victims at a tender age and threatened and bribed them into silence.

“The victims kept quiet for many years fearing the effect reporting the matter would have on the health of another.

“They kept quiet out of a sense of shame over what you had done to them over the years.”

Judge Hatton said the victims had “summoned considerable courage” to come forward and report the abuse in late 2011.

Edmund Haygarth, defending, said he was able to offer “limited mitigation” on behalf of Russell, a retired binman.

Russell was sentenced to 18 months for offences against his first victim and two and a half years for offences against each of the other two victims.

He was also made subject to the Sexual Offences Prevention Order, stopping him from having any unsupervised contact with girls under the age of 17.
