Ripon man jailed after admitting sex with schoolgirl

A Ripon man has been jailed for three years after admitting sexual activity with a child.

Graham Cooper Tempest had previously been arrested and bailed for meeting up with a 15-year-old girl he met on Facebook, but despite this, York Crown Court heard he went on to have a sexual relationship with her.

The court heard the victim – who cannot be named for legal reasons – got to know 29-year-old Tempest on the social media site and then had several meetings with him, including a trip to the cinema and a kiss.

Suspicions were raised and Tempest, of Wakeman Road, was arrested and bailed.

Nick Adlington, prosecuting, told the court the schoolgirl had then started playing truant and sneaking out of her home at night to meet up with Tempest and to have consensual, unprotected sex at his flat.

The former warehouseman appeared for sentencing, having previously admitted a specimen charge of having sexual activity with the child – the offences having taken place between April 5 and April 28 this year.

Susanah Proctor, mitigating, told the court that this was not the girl’s first sexual experience, adding that there had been a true attraction between the pair.

She said Tempest now realised the psychological effect his offending would have had on the vulnerable girl, his actions having been out of character for her client who has no previous convictions on his criminal record.

Tempest was jailed for three years and placed indefinitely on the Sex Offender register.

He was also indefinitely barred from working with children and placed under a Sexual Offences Protection Order for a similar period, restricting his use of the internet and contact with girls under 16.
