A PAEDOPHILE who sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl several times in the 1990s has been sent to jail.

The victim confided in a friend last year about her horrific ordeal and then reported it to the police.

Day was arrested in February and pleaded guilty to rape, attempted rape, four counts of indecent assault and gross indecency with a child at Cambridge Crown Court.

In all the 48-year-old was sentenced to a total of eight years at Cambridge Crown Court and Judge Anthony Bate recommended Day be deported back to Ireland after he has served his sentence.

He pleaded guilty to rape, attempted rape, four counts of indecent assault and gross indecency with a child at Cambridge Crown Court.

“The victim showed great bravery in coming forward after such a long time in order to bring her abuser to justice,” said Detective Constable Natalie Bottom.

“This case shows that even after many years, we are still able to successfully prosecute offenders.

“People who have committed historic offences should be warned that they face a knock on the door from police,” she added.
