Former Glossop teacher jailed for assaulting young girls

A former teacher has been jailed for two years after pleading guilty to six counts of indecently assaulting girls in the 1980s and 1990s.

John Morton admitted six counts of indecently assaulting six girls, who were aged seven to 11 at the time.

He was given two years for each count, to be served concurrently, and placed on the sex offenders register for ten years.

Morton abused the girls during music lessons. He gave the lessons at their homes, his home and at St Mary’s Roman Catholic School, in Gladstone Street, Glossop, where he worked at the time.

The 70–year–old, of Silk Street, Glossop, was convicted of an indecent assault against a pupil in 1991 and left the teaching profession.

These latest allegations came to light when a woman called police in 2011 and reported that he had abused her during music lessons in the late 80s and early 90s.

Other girls from the school were traced and they also made complaints against him.

He was sentenced at Derby Crown Court on Thursday, June 20.

Investigating officer DC Graham Barrick said: “These women must be praised for their bravery in coming forward and speaking to police about what happened to them.

“I’m sure it was difficult recounting their experiences but without them, we could not have brought Morton to justice.

“I would urge anyone who wishes to report abuse, whether recent or historical, to call us. You will be believed and you will be supported.”
