Child sex assault Isle of Man nursery worker jailed

A former Isle of Man nursery worker who indecently assaulted a young child where he worked has been jailed for five years and three months.

Andrew James Maddrell, 24, from Ballanard Road, Douglas, carried out the attack when he was employed by a Kindergarten in Douglas.

At Douglas Courthouse on Monday he was given four years and eight months for assault and a seven-month term for making indecent images of children.

The sentences will run consecutively.

A spokeswoman for the kindergarten said: “We would like to state that during the past year the nursery has never been under investigation.

“We thank all the parents past and present for their support during this difficult time.”

Sentencing Maddrell, Deemster Montgomerie said his crimes were “totally unacceptable”, and that a social care report stated he posed a “high risk to children”.

He said Maddrell had abused a position of trust that would have provided “real alarm for parents”.

Maddrell, who had no previous convictions, has been in custody since he admitted the charge of indecent assault at Douglas Courthouse on 9 August.

He had pleaded guilty to possessing 232 indecent images of children three days earlier.

The court heard that of those images, 97 were level four and three were level five, the most severe.

Detective Nick Haxby said that the indecent images were discovered following Mr Maddrell’s arrest and had nothing to do with the nursery.

He said it had been an “extremely difficult and distressing investigation”.

Mr Haxby said: “Mr Maddrell was in a position of ultimate trust to care and nurture these children.

“For reasons only known to him he chose to breach this trust and sexually abuse a child for his own sexual gratification.”

Maddrell was also placed on the sex offenders register for a minimum of 20 years.
