Clifton pensioner jailed for abusing girls in the 1970s

A PENSIONER who sexually assaulted two young girls more than three decades ago has been jailed for more than eight years.

David Bell, of Moreton Road, Clifton, was sentenced to eight years and two months at Nottingham Crown Court on Friday.

He entered guilty pleas on April 23 to two counts of indecent assault and one of indecency with one child. But he pleaded not guilty to two counts of indecent assault and one of indecency with another child.

He was found guilty following a three day trial in September 2013 and will also sign on to the sex offenders register for life.

Bell, 69, was arrested in July 2012 after two women came forward to report that they had suffered the abuse in the 1970s and 1980s.

The abuse happened to one of them from the age of four and another from when she was 10 years old. It continued until they were both around 12 years old.

Detective Constable Kayne Rukas of Notts Police said: “The abuse carried out against these two women when they were young has had a profound effect on their lives. It has taken almost 40 years for them to find the strength to come forward and see this man put behind bars for his abhorrent acts.

“Historical cases like this are difficult to investigate and bring to court but as a force we are committed to rigorously investigating reports like these and prosecuting those responsible for crimes against children.

“I hope that both these women can now move forward with their lives.”
