Dewsbury pervert Shaun Richard Keenan loses jail appeal

A Dewsbury pervert, caged for flaunting himself in front of a young girl, has failed in an Appeal Court bid to clear his name.

Shaun Richard Keenan, 45, was put behind bars for 18 months at Leeds Crown Court in July last year after he was convicted of engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child.

Prosecutors claimed Keenan, of West Park Street, played with himself in front of the girl, who was aged under 10, but he steadfastly denied guilt – insisting that “the event simply didn’t take place.”

His case reached London’s Appeal Court as Keenan strove unsuccessfully to challenge both his conviction and sentence.

But Mr Justice Jay, sitting with Lord Justice Laws and Mr Justice Blake, said there was “no tenable basis for holding the sentence to be manifestly excessive.”

Challenging the guilty verdict, Keenan’s lawyers claimed the trial judge failed to properly warn the jury about the need to treat the victim’s evidence with caution because of her youth.

However, dismissing the appeal, Mr Justice Jay said the judge had given the panel “entirely appropriate directions.”
