Teacher sentenced for further abuse

A retired teacher currently in prison for abusing young boys in the late 70s has been sentenced for further indecent assaults.

David Lowe, 66 (27.09.53) of Bristol, was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment at Southwark Crown Court on Monday, 4 November after pleading guilty to two counts of indecent assault on a boy under 14 at a previous hearing.

Lowe is currently serving a ten-year prison sentence after being found guilty of 15 child abuse offences, involving ten boys under the age of 13, in February 2015.

The two-year sentence will run concurrently to this existing sentence.

The alleged offences were committed at Westminster Cathedral Choir School between September 1979 and August 1982, and relate to two victims.

The victims in this case, who now live abroad, came forward after seeing the publicity around the first trial and the resulting conviction.

The first victim was abused by Lowe after he was taken to a private room at the school as punishment for being a “bad student”, and told to undress.

Lowe abused the second victim when he was around eight-years-old in the boy’s school bedroom.

Both victims came forward separately in June 2015, and officers from the Met’s Central Specialist Crime Department led the investigation.

Lowe was interviewed under caution about both allegations in October 2015. He was charged on 13 September 2019, and appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 7 October.

Paedophile teacher jailed for abusing boys at top Pimlico/Westminster choir school

David Lowe

A retired teacher who worked at a top choir school in Westminster has been jailed for a string of sex assaults on young boys.

David Lowe, 61, was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Thursday (February 5) after he was found guilty last Wednesday (January 28) at Southwark Crown Court of 15 counts of abuse involving 10 boys under the age of 13.

Lowe, of Bristol, worked at the £16,000-a-year Westminster Cathedral Choir School in Ambrosden Avenue, Pimlico, where he groomed six boys, one just eight-years-old, between 1978 and 1985.

He also had four victims at Ampleforth College, a top Catholic boarding school in North Yorkshire.

The incidents often took place while the boys were in their dormitories at night, the court heard, and he groomed them by bribing some with sweets and showering them with compliments during his years as an English and music teacher.

The court heard how on other occasions Lowe would fondle pupils during individual singing lessons, in his private office or flat. He would also pretend to punish boys by removing their lower clothing, placing them across his lap and smacking them.

Lowe was only caught when one of the boys, now an adult in his 40s, came forward to report the incident to police and Lowe was arrested at his Bristol home in November 2012.

Speaking after the sentencing, Detective Sergeant Kirstie Martin of the Met’s sexual offences, exploitation and child abuse command, said: “David Lowe was a well-respected and talented teacher. He knew the boys he targeted felt hugely loyal to their schools and their teachers. He used this knowledge to abuse his position of trust in a truly terrible way.

“He transpired to be a persistent offender who committed his crimes over a prolonged period. He used young boys, who were often staying away from the security of their own home, to his own advantage. His actions left his victims feeling frightened, lonely and confused.

“Despite the abuse his victims, now all adults, somehow found the courage to relive their experiences. That courage has directly secured Lowe’s conviction and we can only hope that they can now find some closure.

Ex-housemaster guilty of sexually abusing boys at Westminster Cathedral Choir School

A former housemaster at a prestigious Catholic private school in London has been found guilty of sexually abusing pupils there in the 1970s and 1980s.

David Lowe, 61, abused the children as they slept in their dormitory beds at Westminster Cathedral Choir School.

He also targeted his ten victims – who cannot be named for legal reasons – during singing lessons.

Southwark Crown Court heard he left sweets and treats in the lockers of those who were part of his “special group”.

A jury found Lowe guilty of 15 counts of indecent assault on a boy aged under 14 years old today after about nine hours of deliberations.

Lowe, who now faces a prison sentence, stood in the dock and looked straight ahead without any change of expression as each verdict was announced.

Judge Martin Beddoe granted him conditional bail to next appear at the same court for sentencing.

He said this was so the victims had the chance to come and see him jailed if they wished, noting that “for some of those who have had troubled lives since, it might provide some closure and assistance”.

The judge told Lowe, who is now retired from teaching, that it was inevitable that ” you will receive a sentence of imprisonment on the offences on which you now stand convicted.”

He attacked his victims, boys aged eight to 13, between 1978 and 1984.

Many of them studied at the £16,000-a- year choir school, while others were abused at the Benedictine monk-run Ampleforth College in North Yorkshire.

Lowe invited the youngsters to his flat and “spanked” them when they had broken school rules.

He also crept into the vulnerable schoolboys’ dormitory and intimately touched them while carrying out night time checks.

A former pupil told the court he was 10 years old when he was abused.

The inappropriate touching began as “massages” during piano lessons, but Lowe started to slide his hands into his trousers.

In 1981, one of Lowe’s alleged victims complained about being repeatedly abused by him, and shortly afterwards the teacher left the prestigious school, Philip Bennetts QC, prosecuting, told the court.

However, it was not long before he started working at Ampleforth College, where he abused four of his 10 victims.

Jurors heard Lowe had a “small group of pupils that he was extra friendly with”, and even invited a select few to his wedding.

One victim recalled Lowe inviting him to his room at the choir school and asking him to remove his trousers and lie across his lap.

The man told the trial: “He called me upstairs, and I remember thinking ‘here we go again, I am going to get some more of this’.

“I remember he sat me down on the sofa, and he told me to take my pants and trousers off, which I duly did.

“Why I don’t know, but kids do these things I guess.”

The man described how Lowe fondled him for around half an hour, saying what happened in the music rooms had been “like a warm up act”.

Lowe, of Bristol, is due to be sentenced on February 5.
